Phantogram is an American duo from Greenwich, in upstate New York near Saratoga Springs, made up of Sarah Barthel on vocals and keyboards and Josh Carter on guitar and vocals, who have been friends since childhood. They began playing together in 2007 under the name Charlie Everywhere, releasing two EPs on Sub-Bombin Records before signing to the UK label BBE in January 2009 and renaming themselves after the phantogram, an optical illusion in which a two-dimensional image reads as three-dimensional. Their music combines dream pop and trip-hop textures with electronic production, looped and sampled drums, swirling guitar and Barthel's airy vocals. The debut album Eyelid Movies appeared on BBE in 2009 and was issued in the United States by Barsuk Records on February 9, 2010; an expanded edition with previously unreleased songs followed in November 2022. Voices arrived in 2014 and produced Fall in Love, a top-ten US Alternative single. In 2015 the pair joined Big Boi of OutKast for the side project Big Grams, releasing a self-titled EP. Three followed in 2016, debuting at number nine on the Billboard 200 and led by You Don't Get Me High Anymore, which also reached the Alternative top ten. Ceremony came in 2020, and the duo's fifth album, Memory of a Day, was released on October 18, 2024, with singles including All a Mystery, Happy Again, Come Alive, It Wasn't Meant to Be and Attaway. Reviewers of that record singled out its cinematic scale and its mix of eighties and nineties reference points with contemporary production. Phantogram has toured with Linkin Park, Muse and Beach House, and on the road the duo expands to a full band, pairing Barthel's front-of-stage presence with heavy low end and strobing visuals.
